Subject: Unexpected Downtime
Admin: Marc A. Ackley (admin@tht.net)
Notes:
On Thursday, December 2nd, at approximately 09:30 A.M., a core
router in Toronto experienced a hardware failure as a result of
a faulty route switch processor card. UUNet's network technicians
replaced and configured the defective module at approximately
10:30 A.M. Routing stabilized at 10:40 A.M. UUNET is in the process
of replacing the core routers in Toronto and completing our fully
redundant routing infrastructure. The new routers are already
in place and passing traffic, but not fully implemented pending
delivery of OC-12 circuits and other key telco deliverables. The
full implementation of AS 701 backbone in Toronto, Montreal and
Vancouver will eliminate this transitional setup. Work is scheduled
to be completed by the end of December. In the interim, configuration
issues are being scrutinized to ensure proper rerouting in the
event of single network failures. In addition, backup RSP cards
will be installed into all existing core and gateway routers across
Canada, to further improve redundancy and minimize downtime.

Subject: Intermitant routing issues and extended downtime
Admin: Joel A. Haines (admin@tht.net)
Notes:
At approximately 02:00:00 EST a Denial of Service attack come
into our network, directed at one of our customers. This was not
enough to down our network. However, it was enough to make surfing
quite slow and nearly unbearable at times. With help from UUNet
Canada, we were able to stop the incoming packets and get network
traffic flowing at a decent rate once again.
Unfortunately, in the interm of this attack, an
equipment failure in our border router occoured and required rebuilding,
this caused intermitant downtimes while the system was reloaded
repeatedly, and eventually there was a full 20-30 minute period
with no connectivity due to the fact we were unable to bring the
failed equipment back online. A replacement border router arrived
very quickly and allowed us to get running again.
Extended Notes:
There are possibilities that there are still some routes that
may or may not be affected by this new router being in place,
we have attempted to reconstruct as best we could the entire routig
tables. If you're having problems reaching a destination, please
send us a detailed message, including time of trouble, number
you're connected to if you're a dialup customer, Company name
if you're a Dedicated Line customer.

Subject: Primary Nameserver
Admin: Joel A. Haines
Notes:
This morning at approximately 12:30 our Primary Nameserver failed
and eventually crashed. Our Secondary Nameserver was able to facilitate
most of our customers to allow them to continue with their daily
routines on the Internet, unfortunately some customers have manually
excluded the Secondary (Where appliciable) or do not have access
to such settings at this time. We will be upgrading the primary
nameservice machine sometime later today, a bulletin will be posted
as there will be approximately a 4 minute gap in quite a number
of services.
Extended Notes:
The new nameserver is up and running, and seems to be fairly stable,
there have been no reported problems with it for nearly 72 hours,
once it reaches a point where we are sure it is stable, this ticket
will be closed out.

UUNET will be resetting our core router in Montreal.
This is emergency maintenance to fall back to an earlier code
version of the router operating software. All connections in Quebec
and the Maritimes will be affected. We anticipate an outage not
to exceed ten minutes during this maintenace.
UUNET [Canada] Customer Service
Extended Notes:
We have been assured that this will not affect our immediate services,
but anyone attempting to reach a site/person behind the affected
Network in Quebec and the Maritimes will be unable to do so during
these times.

Subject: Trouble with Parrysound location Resolved
Admin: Marc Ackley (admin@tht.net)
Notes:
The problematic modems that plagued our Parrysound location, have
been replaced with brand new USRobotics 33,600 Sportster modems.
This should make connecting a lot easier, and at times, actually
possible. Connection speeds should increase with the upgrade as
well as download speeds. Please contact us if you experience any
problems connecting with these modems.

Problematic modems plague our Parrysound location, causing random
disconnection and extremely difficult connections at times. We
have put in an order to replace all analog modems in that location
with USRobitics 33,600 Sportsters and will have them in place
as soon as they arrive at our Vendor. Please be patient if you
are affected by this service outage.
