General FAQs
Can I get ADSL in my area?
To see the latest availiblity on service you may want to check
you postal code on the ADSL index page by clicking
HERE . We encourage you to keep checking even if denied as
the area cover by DSL services is continually expanding.
Why would I want high-speed Internet access?
High speed internet access offers a variety of advantages:
- There is a 40 time increase in speed
- Ability to download large files in
seconds
- Ability to send or recieve faxes and talk
on the phone while surfing on the internet
- Higher quality
video and audio clips from the internet
- And much much more
Do I need another phone line?
No! This is the advantage to ADSL!
The hardware used enables you to have the line set-up on your home
phone. This allows you the freedom to surf and chat with friends at
the same time! Or fax while checking your email!
I
live in an area where THT's ADSL service appears to be availible,
why can't I get it?
There are several things that may prevent THT from providing service
to you:
< Residence is too far from Bell Canada. The actual distance
is measured by the length of copper wire between the Central Office
and your home that determines if you are within or outside the area
of availability.
- There
is a second line in the house, and both lines share the same physical
copper wire. The technology used in that case is called Added Main
Line (AML) and is not compatible with THT's HighSpeed service.
- The Bell
Canada Central Office to which you are connected is not equipped with the
technology needed for High Speed service.
- Your
telephone line is connected to the Central Office through a "remote"
office. This technology has been used to provide telephone service to
developing areas. Unfortunately, at the moment, the "remote" does not
allow for the technology required.
- The telephone network was developed in
stages, over the years, as demand increased. Different distribution
patterns, to get the telephone service to neighbourhoods, were used
at different times. This staging sometimes results in line
conditions that are not compatible with High Speed service.
After I submit my order, how long will it take befor my ADSL service is
activated?
The length of time depends
on the type of account purchased:
-Personal:
Activation usually takes 5-8 business days -
Business: Activation usually takes 12-14 business days
Does THT limit the amount of throuput (traffic) I can send or recieve on my ADSL per
month?
No! There is no limit on usage outside of the acceptable use policy outlined in our
membership agreement.
Can I charge people to use my ADSL service or my bandwidth?
No. Unfortunately this is not an acceptable feature with this service. Those wishing to
resell bandwith or usage should contact our sales representative and discuss the
appropriate options for this service.
Does THT have a proxy server availible?
No. There is no proxy servers availible at this time. Stay tunned for coming features and
services to be added to our basic ADSL service packages.
What is the difference between a static IP and a dynamic IP?
A static IP is one that is fixed. It is an IP address you will connect with everytime you
use the internet. However, a dynamic IP is ever changing and does not remain constant.
The advantage to this is the ability to have your own reversing, run your own mail server (closed relay), and people
can find you on the internet easier.
Will ADSL interfere with my other telephone services (i.e., Call answer or Call
display)?
Anything you would normally be able to do on your phone line can still be done while
connected to THT's High Speed services. ADSL does not interfere with any normal voice/data
functions currently present or added to you phone line.
I live in an apartment building where my phone is an intercom. Can I still use ADSL
service without affecting this?
Definetly.
If your intercom dials your phone number, there will be no interuption in you ADSL service
when people try to gain access.
However, if you intercom operates on an extention basis you may experience a temporary
interruption in connectivity when someone tries to gain access.
Does ADSL protect against viruses or hackers?
No. It is your responsiblity to protect your system. THT recommends virus scanning any
file attachments downloaded off the internet prior to opening them.

Modem Questions
What are my installation options?
You may either:
- Full
Installation:
A THT technician will schedule customer installation visits (to your home) seven days a week. Our technician will bring
the Starter Kit with them. - Self Installation:
Many customers choose to do the installation
themselves. Your Starter Kit, with everything that you need, will be
delivered to your residence or to another daytime location of your
choice, at your convenience.
How easy is it to install myself?
Most
1-Meg Modems are "plug & play". Our THT HighSpeed software has
an install wizard to make your life easier. Opening up your computer
and installing the Ethernet card may, by many, be considered the
most difficult part. If you do happen to run into difficulty our
ADSL techincal support staff is accessible to help you through your
install over the phone or in person.
What does the THT technician do?
The technician will bring, install and configure the 1-Meg Modem, the Ethernet card, the phone filters and THT's HighSpeed
software. Once the installation has been completed, the technician will perform tests to ensure connectivity to the Internet.
Note: you must have your Windows 95 / Windows 98 or Macintosh system CD-ROMS, as these may be required to complete the
installation.
If I have my own Ethernet card, will the technician still come and install
THT Starter Kit?
If you are using another Ethernet card than the one we supply for PC, you will have to ensure that the card is installed
before the technician's visit. The technician will install the 1-Meg Modem, the filters and THT's HighSpeed software. The
technician will also configure your existing Ethernet card with the correct settings and perform end-to-end connectivity
tests.
Please remember that we will only support the Ethernet card that is provided in the Starter Kit.
The third light on my modem (loop status) is red. Why?
If you've received your Starter kit early, wait until your activation date. If you think it should be active, make sure you
did not plug the modem into a filter. If the light is still red, make sure that the modem is at least 12 inches from your
monitor. Finally, try a different outlet. If it still doesn't work, call THT technical support and speak with one of our
technical staff.
Can I hook up the 1meg modem to a hub?
Yes! However, you can only use two computers on your hub. If it is your intent to use more than one computer you must let us
know when ordering your line as each computer needs an IP address and we must make arrangements with you to provide this added
featre.
What kind of speed can I expect?
THT's HighSpeed service will provide you with up to 960 kbs downstream and up to 120 kbs upstream. Upstream refers to data
from your computer. Downstream refers to data to your computer. For most people, the amount of data upstream is much smaller
than the amount downstream. This is why your THT HighSpeed service - with its capacity of 960 kbs downstream - will let you
surf at speeds up to 30 times the speed of a 28 kbs modem and up to 17 times the speed of a 56kbs modem.
Please keep in mind that the speed performance that you will experience at any time is dependent on other Internet factors
such as website congestion, for which THT assumes no responsiblity.
2.2 Mbps Modem Questions
Why would I want 2.2 Mbps access as
opposed to 1.3 Mbps?
The 2.2 Mbps access is a faster link. It is
designed for the user who intends to connect multiple computers to the
internet on one link or needs higher speed to perform uploads or
downloads quickly. To find out if this service is best sutied for you
please call and speak with a sales representative.
